Be careful with what paint you choose for the baby nursery

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

You are getting all prepared for that new little bundle and think about what color you might want to paint the nursery.  Before doing that, look into the safest of all paints available that do not give off any VOC’s or at least very little.  We want to keep our babies as healthy as possible and keeping the wrong type of paint away from them is essential.

VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) are given off in the air from paint unless you choose a particular paint with very low or no VOC’s.  Many companies today do carry healthier paints. Real milk paint is another alternative.  Stores such as Sherwin Williams also carry healthier paints for the nursery.

Having an Eco-friendly/healthy home for your baby

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

Many parents are concerned with what the nursery will look like, what design they will use, the paint, the furniture etc.., but the most critical thing for your baby is having a healthy home/nursery.  Of course moms want it to look nice also and be ready for the new bundle, but before spending a fortune in choosing the items, think about what will be the healthiest. You can still have a beautiful nursery, but a healthy one as well.

New rugs and paint are some of the worst items you can put in before the baby arrives unless you are choosing non-synthetic rugs as well as healthy paints.  Furniture should also be non-toxic and organic if possible.

Only healthy paints should be used on your furniture. Fabric should be organic in nature as much as possible.  The bedding as well as the baby clothing should all be the healthiest possible.

Bedding for your baby is one of the most critical of all decisions other than the food we provide for them.  They will spend countless hours sleeping in the beginning. Having an organic crib mattress (and organic futon for a moses basket) as well as organic blankets and sheets is very important.

They will be breathing this in and you want the air they breathe to be the healthiest possible for them.  There are also stuides out that I will write about that will discuss SIDS and the bedding we choose for our children.

Stay away from Teflon especially if you are pregnant!

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

If you’re pregnant, definitely do not use teflon!  By the year 2015, teflon will be eliminated from all products.  It’s causing such health and environmental problems.  I would rather it be eliminated right away, but apparently, patents also protect products.

I was searching for the best diaper bag to carry for my store and another retailer suggested a particular brand diaper bag.  In looking into it further, I found that they use teflon for the waterproofing.  It is not making me wonder how many other companies are using the same chemical.  I knew that heating teflon (in cooking) was very detrimental to our health, but after looking into it further, teflon in general is something we definitely want to avoid.

It really upsets me to think that though they are aware of how harmful this is, they are still allowing it to be used.

Well, I did find a diaper bag that I love and it’s all natural!  Lots of pockets and great for both mom and dad - You will see it listed soon - the manufacturer is Ecolution and the bags are just beautiful!
