Experimenting with a baby’s brain through infant formula?

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

As many of you know, I am certainly not an advocate of infant formula.  Breastmilk is always the best choice  for feeding a newborn baby if possible. Now, in the United Kingdom, they are working on an infant formula that will contain a hormone to supress hunger!

Breastfeeding a baby helps in lowering the incidence of adult obesity.  It contains a hormone called leptin.  Formula does not contain this hormone, but researches want to add it to the formula.  Many advocates are asking if we should be tampering with a baby’s brain.

Read the entire article.  It scares me after I read it.

Is pollution the cause of why fewer baby boys are being born in the United States?

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

A study put out by ABC News talkes about why environmental factors might be to blame for fewer male births in the U.S.

The proportion of baby boys being born has fallen each year according to the study since the 1970’s.  It is a slight decrease, but there is a decrease and the study looks at possible environmental factors.

An excerpt from the article addresses the following regarding the number of babies being born:

…The numbers add up to an overall decline of 17 males per 10,000 births in the United States and a decline of 37 males per 10,000 births in Japan since 1970.

This means, according to the authors, that since 1970, 135,000 white males in the United States and 127,000 males in Japan should have been born but were not.

Slings and wearing your baby

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

Baby wearing is becoming more and more popular in the United States. In many cultures, baby wearing has been part of daily living, but here in the United States, it is now becoming popular and fashionable.  Babies cry less when worn in a sling and love the closeness of being with momma. A baby loves the feeling of her heartbeat.

When I had our first child, I rarely saw a mom wearing their baby.  I was definitely unique, but today more and more moms are wearing them - even celebrities are found wearing baby slings.  Brooke Sheilds, Rachel Weisz ,Angie Harmon, Gwen Stefani, Madonna, Gavin Rossdale, Kate Hudson, Angelina Jolie, Laura Bennent, Michelle Williams, Carrie Ann Moss and Joely Fisher are just a few names of celebrities who wear their baby in a sling.

I can’t imagine being without my sling.  I must say that it is one of the essential items that a mom must have for her baby list/gift registry.

Take a look at all the beautiful fabrics available.  We even have some new designer organic fabrics available that you will love. We carry Karma Baby slings and also the Mama Roo Baby Sling.

Co-sleeping is wonderful!

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Our baby is now 7 weeks old. I can’t believe how he is growing!  He nurses all the time and nurses through the night.  I love cuddling next to him like my own little teddy bear!  I couldn’t imagine it any other way.  Not only is it a wonderful way to nurture your baby, it is the best way to get better sleep, keep your milk supply up and also protect your baby from SIDS.

Dr. William Sears has done a great deal of research on Co-sleeping and has a wonderful article every mom should read on his site.

Another wonderful item that moms love is the Humanity Infant and Herbal Co-sleeper.  It makes Co-sleeping safer and comfy for both mom and baby.

I really can’t imagine having it any other way.  I’ve co-slept with all four of our children and it really is the best!

Investing in your baby’s future in the first three years of life

Monday, April 16th, 2007

An article addressed the importance of a baby’s brain development by the third year of life.  So many parents are concerned about how much money they will have saved up by the time their children are ready to enter college.  Although, it is important to plan and save for the future (my parents are financial planners and I certainly understand the importance of putting money away), it is also very critical to invest in your baby/child while they are young.

According to the following article, most of a baby’s brain development is completed (almost 85%) by the time they are three years of age.  Behavior, emotions, social and intellectual skills are nearly completed by this time.  Given this information, we can see how important it is for us moms to stimulate our babies development as much as possible.

I chose to stay at home.  It was very difficult in the beginning for us financially, but I knew doing so would be the best thing I could give my children. That is when I decided to start my business.  I wanted so much to be able to teach my children (I also home school) and spend time with them.

Whatever your situation might be, investing in your little one at this time of life will be the best possible thing you can do.

Infant baby formula makers are told in the U.K that formula is not better than breastmilk.

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

An interesting article was posted recently that stated the following:

Baby milk manufacturers have been ordered to drop nutrition claims which suggest they are a valid alternative to breastfeeding.

Claims such as ‘Closer than ever to breast milk’ and ‘helps growth and the immune system’ have been banned.

This article is posted in full at the following link: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23388554-details/Baby%20milk%20firms%20told:%20′don’t%20claim%20formula%20is%20as%20good%20as%20breast%20milk’/article.do

As I mentioned in my last blog, I get very upset that hospitals are giving out infant formula to moms when leaving the hospital.  Infant formula can never duplicate what God has created.  Breastmilk is and will always be the perfect food for a baby.
